I bought my magnet wire at my local electronics supply store, and it is the normal, reddish colored stuff. I don't know if it's varnish or enamel or some sort of plastic coating, but it is quite resilient, and even twisting wires together seems to be safe. Considering the low cost of a roll of this stuff, it might be worth your while to try it. By the way, I have just scraped the insulation off each end with an X-acto blade and used the wire without spades or bananas.
