I completed my DIY DAC 5 recently using AN UK PCB's (digital, high voltage, filament supply and analog PCB). It's stunning machine. Only the best parts were used throughout (BG WKZ and VK, AN tantalums, AN silver mylar caps, silver wire). 12au7 and 6463 tubes are used in output. Mains transformers are original AN. At first I used AN's Super Hi-B copper transformers but it always felt like it might sound better. Two weeks ago I installed Lundahl LL1689 with amorphous core in place of AN transformers. Result is much better sound. Better definition of each note, agility and transparency are the main points where Lundahl is better. All this for 3X less money.
AN transformers really sound good, but there are better transformers out there for less money. I am planning to upgrade my 300B monoblock amplifiers with something from Lundahl.

I know Astrostar is a full on believer in anything that has to do with AN has to be AN sanctioned and there is nothing wrong with that. But! It does close the doors to other options that might be as you have found out. I never compared anything in the AN DAC with other brands but it just can't be that AN is that far over the top of other brands of items. Personally I thing they just use top quality parts to justify that because of it the music will sound better therefore they can charge more. When people learn what you have experienced then AN will have a run for its money. Right now they are living on an old name. That's not to say that their products aren't good but there are others that are just as good if not better for less. But! How do you describe better?
Snell made a great speaker at one time using very inexpensive drivers(Vifa and I didn't use the word "cheap"). The way they used them, the box they were installed in, the crossover, etc. all contributed to the final result which in my opinion was impressive.
I think we all get the picture!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello Zvone,
How did you connect the Lundahl? Balanced? I've heard similar (sound improvement) story's about the Sowter 9762 interstage transformers bettering the (VERY expensive) AN Trans-496. Not (yet) ;-) from my own experience.
Mark.
One bettering the other? That can be suggestive but not impossible. AN doesn't have a lock and key to quality. There are many great things out there for far less.
It is connected unbalanced 18:1 ratio. Maybe Lundahl has even better transformers for this use, but for now I'm very happy with this one. I looked at the LL1660 before I bought these. Does anyone have any opinion on LL1660 for this use?
My friend reported very good results with Sowter line transformers in M3 line preamplifier (he replaced AN M4 I/E core). I'm not sure which one, I'll ask him and report here. He experimented with different resistors on the secondary of transformers (preamplifier output) so he can adjust the load output stage sees to make it sound best. Load on the secondary side of the transformer somehow reflects on the output stage. He also tried Hashimoto 33:1 transformers and wasn't satisfied.
I'm using TRANS-496 in my DAC and I'm happy for now. Sowter 9762 looks very interesting...
Sowter transformer from my last post is model 1160
Hi Zvone,
I've sent an email to you about this subject. Please check it out and reply.
Thanks,
Boris
Several years ago I upgraded my DAC 1.2 output section. Used AN Preamp transformer model: 011/01A and a single tube per channel. This simplifies
the output section to one transformer, one tube (6N1P), and the necessary cap and resistor to set the tubes biases point in a cathode follower arrangement. Big improvement over stock and upgraded original output board
in the 1.2
That is the entire output section per channel. For me, this was a more economical than rolling designer caps and endless list of tube.
