S'phile Class B amp gets terrible review in ASR:

Follow Ups:
I built one a few years ago. It was fun to build but I sold it after a few months, nothing special.

Disagree ... it's a Good affordable amp. Omissions are subtle/slight, hardly a deal breaker... unless 'posturing/ jockeying for 'position'Frankly far better than 90% of the Dross available. (without ludicrous pricings) very Honest in it's price / performances.
That Said the Neurochrome (aanother lm3886 based Amp) is Notably better.
And a Firstwatt is far better than both..All depends on How good Ones' hearing acuity is (if over 50 yrs old.. fairly Poor IF Honest)
And whether one is Status Posing.

Never heard the amp but some folks like the dominating 2nd order distortion which still isn't that high.
It is oiced with a slight 'sweeetness' which may be what you are describing
They bought the 8 Ohm optimized version and tested it at 4 Ohms. Why not buy the GT-104 instead which is designed for the loads they are testing at? Missing details like that is what limits the usefulness of their reviews for me.
I don't see a good reason why 8 vs. 4 ohm versions should be necessary in case of good design. But then looking descriptions on the Akitika site, I didn't see any comment the precludes the 8 ohm version being use into 4 ohms beyond that the GR-108 "is well optimized for driving 8 Ohm speakers". Or vice versa for the matter. If anyone can resolve this mystery it would be interesting to hear the explanation.Apparently ASR conducted most testing into 4 ohms which I believe is normal for them. However Amir did conducted a power vs. distort test at 8 ohm which delivered virtually identical results to the 4 ohm test.
