I was comparing the specs between the yamaha c65 and the c85 preamps. The main difference seems to be in the input sensitivity, which is significantly lower in the c85. The c65 is .1mv and 1.5 mv for mc and mm, whereas the c85 is .033 and .8. Is that significant?
Is the c85 a better sounding unit? Other differences? I assume the c85 was TOTL for a reason....

You can use a lower output cartridge with the c 85! You would have to look at the output spec on the cartridge you are going to use! Just remember that the output of the cartridge has to be more than the input sensitivity of the preamp ! If not your preamp will not put out it's full output!

I didn't know they went that low.. I know little about mc carts.
So, functionally more choices.. Also inherently better sound?
I have a c-65 and am wondering about upgrading to the c85, if i can find one for under 300.00

Both of those preamps would work fine with just about any cartridge except a real low output mc! That being said it is all a matter of taste,I myself like a good mm! The sensitivity ratings on both of them seem rather on the low side. Usually a mm cartridge has an output of 3 mv or more! You are on the safe side with any of those two preamps! What cartridge do you now use?
I have a denon dl160 which is high output but I prefer it at 1000 ohm on the mc setting, and a variety of MM carts. The c 65 does well with the Denon although the volume needs to be way up to make it loud.

The C-85 has 5.46-dB more gain for MM and 9.63-dB more gain for MC.
