Owned one and it was "tube-like" just as Sam Tellig described years ago in his column in SF...used can be had for near your price limit.

You are exactly right. My bro in law has that amp driving Monitor Audio RS6 floorstanders. Lovely sound, a little polite, good manners. Can listen to it for ever. I have a friend with the same speakers driven by Marantz 8004. Rather metallic sounding. I am afraid spares may be hard to come by.
