The Rogue 99 preamp has a 5-position gain control in addition to an analog volume control. The gain control provides gross control; the volume control provides more precise adjustment.
I think having a gain control is kind of dopey, especially since everyone is trying to reduce components' complexity by eliminating features. However, I now see it can be used to mazimize useable range.

Yes, it does have that effect. I have a lot of experience with the Rogue Audio 99 and various other Rogue Audio preamps. The gain control has other effects as well. It audibly effects the signal by allowing the user to dial in more or less tube gain. The lower the gain setting, the more transparent the sound and the wider the range and the finer the control the volume control offers. The higher the gain setting, the fatter and more dynamic the preamp sounds and the more overall output voltage it is capable of providing. It can almost be used as a sort of tone control, or dynamics control, or transparency control, depending upon how you hear it.

Interesting you mention the 99, I am in the process of deciding whether to purchase one.
One more use for the gain control is compensating for a very sensitive power amp, like the Manleys.
Regor Ladan: Yes, you started a thread inquiring about the Rogue Perseus preAmp and I told you I recently considered the Perseus or 99 and chose the 99. So you've raised your choices to include the 99?
Wasn't that consideration for a friend? As I recall, you said your budget was for under $2,000. The 99 without phono is a little more than that. The Perseus phono stage is solid state and it comes with the preAmp whether you like it or not. The 99 has an optional tube phono stage for about $500.

Just to clarify, yes, the Perseus investigation was for a friend. He VERY happily ended up with a Perseus based on our mutual evaluations.
I was so thrilled with the sound of the Perseus, I have decided to jump in too.
But I can spring for a 99, and I plan on going forward next month. I don't need phono.
I would love to stretch for an Athena, but I don't have the means right now.
I take it all is well with your 99?
Yes, my Rogue 99 preamp is doing very well. I upgraded speakers and speaker cables at the same time and the system sounds fabulous.
BTW, you have a choice of plain Jane 99, 99 Magnum and 99 SuperMagnum. AFAIK, they don't even make the plain Jane 99. I have the 99 Magnum.
My Rogue Titan Atlas is at the factory for Magnumizing and repair. To make a long story short, in the process of replacing its speaker binding posts, I blew something so that it didn't work anymore. :-( I'm now using Marantz MA500 monobloc power amps with the 99. It still sounds very good.

Yes, I don't believe there is a plain jane 99 anymore. I was not aware there is a Super Magnum...no mention that I saw on their site.
Do you know what upgrades those include?
I think we are pretty lucky to have Rogue around. Made in the USA tubes?
Thank god.
The Rogue website says:
"You can also upgrade some older Rogue Audio products!
Upgrades:
Model: MSRP:
. . .
Magnum Ninety-Nine preamplifier $500"

This is somewhat ambiguous, so I called Mark O'Brian on August 4 and asked him to clarify the options. The information about the Supermagnum is straight from the horse's mouth. The MSRP for the Magnum, without phono is $2595, for the Supermagnum, w/o phono is $500. more. They don't make the plain Jane model anymore but, I suppose they could special order one. My notes don't have anything about what the Supermagnum is. I think its even better wiring and components.
It was in that conversation that he said they could put a balance control and an extra line stage output on the model they'd build for me, for an additional $100.
You're in Flushing, right? Lyric Audio in Manhattan has a 99 for audition. Several places have the Metis. I don't know of any near NYC dealers that have the Perseus, but talk to Mark.

Thanks, this is great information.
I am leaning towards a 99 Super Magnum...
I would be willing to buy it without an audition, which would be the FIRST time ever for me. But having spent time with the Perseus, giving my friend my opinion, and previously with an Atlas Magnum, I don't think there is much of risk.
You may have seen a post I put up previously about leaning towards the CJ ET3. I have not managed to get a demo yet, but I really like having an old fashioned knob like on the Rogue. Plus I really like Rogue as a company. NO pretense.
Yes, I work in Flushing. I have a dealer I am working with who has been great.
Did you listen to a Perseus? What were your impressions?
AFAIK, Audio Breakthrough in Manhasset has a CJ ET3 for audition. I know what you mean about the feel of a knob as opposed to push buttons and discrete steps. Remember, the CJ, while hybrid, is mostly solid state.

Yes, I had a Perseus in my system for a week and I thought it was an amazing preamp for under $2500. It did all the things tube preamps are supposed to do, and then some. Big bass, liquid mids, and it put some real flesh on the music.
Yes, after some investigation it seems the ET3 is less tube than solid state.
