I very much liked the Capri preamp but just never warmed up to the 102. At the time, I was using either a pair of Paradigm Studio 20's or Rega R5 loudspeakers. From my [very limited] experiance with digital amps, I am starting to believe amp/speaker matching is critical when it comes to digital amps, more so than with regular amps. I think the Cary and the Focals just seem to play off each others strengths. I'd like to try some other combinations of speakers with the Cary and see. The Focals are fast, detailed and can be a bit ruthless in the treble with the wrong amp. The Cary is full, detailed and a little "dark". Together, they just seem to get along. This is with the Cary right out of the box. Should only get better as the amp warms up and burns in over the next few weeks.
Follow Ups:
Also want to mention that while the Rowland was rated at 100wpc and the Cary at 125wpc, the Cary seems to sound much more powerfull. Not sure why that would be with only a 25wpc difference but it sure sounds that way.
When I used to be a Cary dealer, I had this integrated amp hooked up to a pair of MartinLogan Clarity at a show that we put on. They matched very well. It is a good integrated amp.
