In Reply to: RE: Any suggestions for a small(20~25 w/ch) Class-A power amp? posted by billmilosz@aol.com on May 28, 2007 at 14:33:55
Yes, either a Classe DR2/DR3 or the excellent Pioneer M-22.
The Classe will range from 1000 to 1500, the Pioneer from 800 to 1000 in excel condition. Both are wonderful 25 to 30 watters with pure God given class A 3D sound.

Follow Ups:
The Pass Aleph 30 is a graet sounding class a amp. Have been borrowing one. It is very quiet. Also have the Series 20 (Pioneer) 30 watt/channel class a amp. It is really good as Peter said. Have the service manuals on it. Was hoping Stereophile would do a review on it since they were doing older equipment. Love its styling. Any chance of a review Peter?
thanks

I have been testing many different amplifiers over the past year (since a cycling injury)and its time to report on them. The Pioneer M-22 and M-25 are exceptional units. An M-25 sold three weeks ago for over 1,800 well above its original retail of approx 1200--so the market is agreeing with me. The M-22 is comparable to many SETs. I think it may be one the best sleeper amps available. I run a pair of M-25s bi-amping one of the Bozak systems--its extraordinary. The M-25 does a surprisingly good job on the MBL 101Es as well. Who would have thought!
Another great amplifier that we all overlook is the orginal Phase Linear 700. I started testing one a couple months ago and it offers up true high performance sound, pin point imaging, wide dynamics and an "organic" feel that serves the music. I was taken by complete surprise.

I have a re-capped one (with the wooden sleeve a la old Marantz), and is at the same level as the exalted Bedini 25/25 (which I owned) and ML2, which I've heard, at length.
The Sugden is good contrast to an Eico HF-81 (own a restored one, too) which I know you love. Come to think of it, I prefer both of these to my Wright 2A3 (now sold, too). They do come up on eBay from time to time.
