I forgot to mention that the C-220 is a world beating phono-only preamp. It is a good match if it suites your needs.
Also, my old C-200 cleanly outperformed my old CAT Ultimate across the board. So it and the 270 are hardly slouch's, but the 240 IS the best match if you can get one.
Follow Ups:
Thank you very much for your advice. I already cleaned the fan, but the air flow is noisy too. I tried to isolate, but the only way would be to install it outside the room, which is not really convenient (!). Except if you strongly advise me against, I will try to disconnect the fan and remove the top cover of the amp ; mos-fet are supposed to be resistant against overheating, if I understand well what is said in the p-266 brochure. And avoid class-A operation.
I will try to find a C-240, do you have any particular advice regarding the price or intelligent questions a potential buyer should ask to an invisible seller ? (I must admit that I'm not familiar in buying used eletronics devices through internet, books are less complicated...).
I’m more reluctant to change the digital source, because (i) accuphase digital sources and their classification are a complete mystery to me, and (ii) I think that high def’ files with computer based solutions are already a better solution than cd transport : perhaps accuphase will propose some new product one day or another.
P.S. please forgive my ignorance, but what's the meaning of %22slouch%22 ?
The P-400 will run stably in class-a/b without the fan. With the C-240, all switch's and stages should be in proper working order.
Slouch pretty much means not up to par, not as good as, ect.
Thank you for your information. I'll disconnect this stupid fan and will give a feed back in some weeks, if it can help.
Regarding the C-240, it's a matter of time : none in Germany or Italy for the moment(you find more accuphase gear in these two countries than in the rest of europe...), and one in an ebay shop in the netherlands, but far too expensive (euro 1200, approx. usd 1600). Wait and see.
But, of course, the Mark Levinson 320s cleanly outperformed my old CAT Ultimate and anything ever built by Accuphase. So it and the 32s Reference are one of the best values in audio, so it's a toss up.
I did not author the above post (crackpot), and no preamp betters a reference-class Accuphase when accuracy, linearity, transparency and true-to-life sound is the goal!
