1. Miles Davis Quintet at The Minor Key, Detroit, '61 or '62.
I saw Miles at least a half dozen times but this was his (and the) BEST concert ever in my experience. The Minor Key was a small club with floor level around small tables. We sat within 20' of the stage. We stayed for all three sets and I was spellbound. When it was the best ever Miles, nothing else could come close.
2. Mahavishnu Orchestra at Funky Quarters, San Diego, mid-'70s.
Another small club setting and we were on center within 10' of the stage. Everyone in the group was super-connected that night and the interplay between all five musicians was simply magical. Lead by Billy Cobham, their energy just seemed to build throughout the evening. They left me high for days afterward (without any other stimulant!).
3. The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band at the Del Mar Fair, late-'80s.
An improvised stage set up in front of the grandstand at the Del Mar Racetrack for the County Fair was not a place I would expect an outstanding performance but it surely happened that day. It was not the setting but the simple convergence of energy among every member of the group. I bought a few NGDB albums after that but nothing came close to the wonderful experience of seeing and hearing them live that day.
So, a common theme — outstanding musicians playing with great energy and interaction.
Sorry but no way I can list 20 concerts as "the best".
