Ortofon have decided that the Technics SL1200 (with or without mods) is just not hi fi - only fit for DJ work. They have withdrawn support from Kevin Barrett at KAB and will now only supply him with DJ type carts. When his present stock is gone, thats your lot.Who is next? What do Ortofon consider an audiophile deck? Rega? Linn? apparantly anything as long as its not a Technics.
I can hear a lot of you saying quite right too. The SL1200 is nothing more than a DJ tool and not worthy of consideration as a cutting edge record spinner. What a pity, I know a lot of you on this forum hold Kevin in high regard, even if you do not agree with his love of the SL1200, he is certainly an audiophile and an ambassador for analogue playback togther with a passion for preserving priceless vinyl. Personnally I think it is a short sighted decision, still I am sure there are plenty of other cartridge makers of just as fine cartridges as Ortofon willing to step into the breach. I was thinking of replacing the stylus on my Ortofon / SME 30H integrated cart wand but maybe I'll look at AT or Shure instead.
