Welcome Licorice Pizza (LP) lovers! Setup guides and Vinyl FAQ.

Maybe it's an impedance matching issue.

I have the same situation with my counterpoint sa5.1 preamp.

The output impedance of your preamp is listed as 800 ohms, but since it's a 6922 output stage it may actually be a little higher. The Alesis only has an input impedance of 10kohms. While this is typical of these kinds of devices, it's probably a lot lower than the input impedance of your amplifier, which could be as high as 100k. You are probably getting a better impedance match going from your preamp to your power amp and that's why it sounds noticeably better, i.e. not soft.

The fact that you need to run your pre at 3 o'clock tells me that you just don't have enough gain (for vinyl out to the Alesis) and/or a poor impedance match. If you really want to make nice vinyl copies to the masterlink perhaps you should look at an alternative way of getting the signal in there. I guess you could look at different phono stages, a DI box and a channel strip for your existing phono stage (tape out), or a dedicated A/D converter with a built in pre amp for your existing preamp's phono stage.

Or you could just play your records and enjoy them. That's what I would do ;>)
