I actually used to have all of my front-end gear and preamp in another room. That was (still is) the library where all the Lp's and CD's are stored. That made it convenient from that perspective and the only audio gear in the listening room was a power amp and a pair of speakers. That was good sonically and aesthetically.
Really, it didn't matter so much sonically and I wanted more space to store an increasing media collection, so I moved the gear back into the main room. Keeping the gear between the speakers allows the shortest possible cable runs. It also solves the age old problem of how best to utilize the alcove created by a pair of big-arse speakers!
