hum issue with my system on the vinyl side. This hum would be louder sometimes depending on which Phono preamp I was using but was always very faint. I have 3 phono preamps, Electrocompaniet ECP-1, Musical Paradise MP-P1, and SPL Phonos. The hum was a very low on all the 3 but I could hear it more with the ECP-1.
Since the Phonos was the more quiet phono preamp with that low level hum, I just always summed it up to to something that was there and not able to remove it. I put my Sowter SUT I built with the Sowter 1090 1:2 SUT for MM cartridge. The reason I used it was the Phonos has 50db gain for the MM side and the ECP-1 has 35db for MM and wanted to boost the output slightly (Btw, it sounds even better with the SUT). The hum I always got was very low and you could start to hear it when you turned up the volume to about half ways, with the Phonos the gain was so high I never got close to half ways on the VC so that's why I didn't notice it that much.
So with the SUT for MM's in the system the hum was really noticeable around 10pm on the VC. So I went and tried everything I could think of that I know about eliminating hum but with nothing working, So I unplugged the table from the ECP-1 and listened again, no more hum just very faint hiss with the VC turn up almost all the way. So I removed the SUT from between and ran the table straight to the ECP-1, very low hum again.
I went back to the ET-2 arm setup instructions and low and behold, I found out where my mistake was, damn! Years ago when I had bought the ET-2 arm from a guy in LA he had taken off the MOD Squad RCA connector block for the ET-2 arm tonearm wire connection that go out to the Phono Preamps. So when I was setting up the Table and getting ready to solder the tonearm wires to the Mod Squad block again I saw 5 wire instead of 4 like in the instructions. So I soldered Green and Red for the Right RCA connector and White and Blue for the Left RCA connector, with the 5th to the Grounding stud and that would connect ground from the table to the Phono preamps. I guess that one was the shield inside the tonearm wand for the wires.
Well, when I reviewed the instructions today I saw the Left RCA wire connection also had a ground connection attached to the Blue return wire on the RCA connector that went to the phono preamps for grounding of the table. I disconnected that what I thought was a ground wire from the grounding post and I grabbed my DIY Grounding wire with Alligator clip on one side and and spade connector on the other side. I attached the Spade connector to the phono Preamp grounding post and the Alligator clip the the Blue wire side of the RCA connector. Fired up the system again, all the hum was totally gone and I had the VC all the way up. Finally got rid of it!
Now, There is something wrong with the SUT and how I wired it. I do not have connectors grounded on the primary side just Floating as shown in the drawings for the Sowter 1090, but the secondary connectors are grounded. Maybe I have to ground the primary connectors too? But I will save that for tomorrow's problem, just enjoying my system right now.
I just thought I would share this just incase anyone is having hum issue that will not go away or very hard to track down on their TT. They can see this and try what I did.
It just pays to take it slow and read and reread when setting up a table or system. Never too old to learn something. :)
