Left Channel disappears any thoughts?

My audio system has a problem. When playing LPs, the left channel will sometimes not come on at all, or will play and suddenly cut out. There are no sounds that seem odd, the audio is just gone.
I have tried to trouble-shoot this problem, often by switching my preamp source to my CD player, where the preamp, cables to the power amp and the speaker cables all seem to be operating correctly.

Anyone have this problem? Thoughts on how further to run this down?
