I'm using two 12v SLAs in series and regulated down to +24vdc for the Salience phono stage. The SLAs were left over from another project.
Here's my guess as to why the AC supply has more drive than the battery supply. This is pure speculation on my part. Some power line noise from the AC supply does sneak through the regulation and filtering and rides on the fringes of the audio signal. This actually gives the sound a bit of a caffinated kick, but at the cost of some transparency.
