Good question, which I cannot answer. I have a tube preamp, and someone lent me this transformer based attenuator to try out. So far, it's much better than the tube preamp with my CD player, and I'm trying to get my low-gain phono stage to work with this unit (right now, the phono stage starts oscillating), or build a better phono stage. It was only after I got this unit and started reading up on transformer based attenuators that I realized that they seem to be "in fashion".
