this is a serious matter to be discussed. In our group we tested different phono stage designs with chemically generated power and regulated AC power supply. We found clearly audible sonic improvements any time we switched from regulated AC to lead acid batteries or NiMH accumulators.I hope you didn't take the humor of my post to imply that I don't take the matter seriously or believe that it is unworthy of discussion. Quite the contrary. I was simply framing it in a humorous light in the form of a public service announcement. I'm working on another.
"This is your hi-fi" (holding up egg)
"This is your hi-fi on AC" (cracking egg into excessively hot frying pan)
"Any questions?"Just haven't found the right images to go with it.
:)
Concerning the discussion of tubes versus solid state in phono stages, the option of pure DC is one of the very few arguments for solid state in my humble opinion.
Yes, it is a bit more practical to power solid state circuits with batteries owing to solid state's not being quite the monumental struggle against nature that tubes are, but tubes and batteries are hardly strangers. I mean, what do you think the B in "B+" stands for? Battery of course. :)
