Re: Math question, off topic

Lee,
Since I have about 20 gifted students (out of 26 - of which the rest are high as well), I see this quite often. Thinking faster than the brain functions.
What I feel is at issue is not so much being able to do math, but really being able to speak math. While I agree that knowing the answer intuitively is great without having to go through the steps, doing so does not really build a concrete understanding at a simpler level that then can be applied to a higher level.
Many of my students come back to me from high school telling me that advanced math is easy after having gone through my program (5th grade). Why, math is math (+,-, /, x). Once you really comprehend the language and the essence of how to do math (the four operations), everything else is just adding more flavour to the dish.
While their result may be great, that they can solve it, I want my students to be able to teach it. To do so requires a level of understanding that is not readily taught (espeically when schools rely on text books). They may score well, but do they really understand what they are doing?
Dave
