Isn't the wavelength corresponding to 1 kHz around 1 foot? Can such localized peaks and dips in the room response really be considered "room modes"? Also, shouldn't any room modes be a lot narrower than the wide 800 Hz to 1.4 kHz band you describe?(Sorry to answer you question with nothing but more questions!)
