This type of cylindrical design is somewhat critical in it's placement and orientation. Some tunign can be done by adjusting the tilt and the side to side angle, but for starters it needs to exactly centered in a symmetrical room setup, exactly in the center of the room.It was designed to be leaned up against the rear wall, and as such may need some rubber feet, or felt pads to prevent any damge to the wall surface, rather than letting the raw wood touch the wall. If so inclined, I would recommend spikes for the legs, for a solid and unmoving base.
Starting place for the angle adjustments is as follows:
The vertical tilt should have the diffusor surface that is furthest into the room straight up and down, and the two side legs equal distances from the rear wall. This has the unit perfectly in the middle of the rear wall, centered and flat with respect to the top to bottom diffusion.
I ended up with mine aimed upward a little in the vertical plane, that is, the bottom of the panel was a little further out into the room, so that the diffusion fires up into the ceiling a little.
One of the things that can be done is to fine tune the exact angles, using masking tape to mark the perfectly centered/straight placement on the floor, and try very slight angle changes. Once you get the angle right, the sound will lock in, it should be obvious. On the other hand, it is possible that an accurate placement in a totally symmetrical room would be opitmized right off the bat.
I can not say for sure, but it may be possible to angle and correct for slight asymmetry of the room or acoustics, etc, so experimentation is the order of the day with this unit.
One of the benefits of the QRD/PRD type diffusors, is that they are not nearly as ensitive to positioning or angle of placement, and need less room to develop the diffusion. Properly placed and positioned, the DIY Diffusor will equal about 75-80% of a retail 2-D diffusor, in a room that is not too small, or has the listening position close to the rear wall.
