RE: I would

When I was a quartz cutter, we'd determine where to start cutting by the smallest edge facet.
The bars were 'grown' from seed quartz of the proper orientation so all were pretty alike, within a couple degrees....tops. I remember talking about 'left' and 'right' orientations. That's why the side the small facet on was important.
We'd use an X-Ray machine to determine the correct angle on which to cut.
Also, many bars were dark / black inside which we 'fixed' by, after cutting into wafers, baking them in a little table top oven. I don't know how hot, but it got rid of the crazy glue used to hole the bars down, at the same time. At the time, I think the engineer told me the bars were irradiated. I have no idea why.

And yes, were heading for quantum territory. Where what most would call 'common sense' doesn't necessarily apply.
