Is there a "proper" splicing method that might be required to meet electrical codes?
The method that meets most electrical code is wire nuts inside a junction box.
Check your local code soldering my be a better electrical connection but it may not be "code".
Everything being up to code is what is important to an insurance company when they are looking for a reason to deny your claim after your house burns down.
