Tweakers' Asylum Tweaks for systems, rooms and Do It Yourself (DIY) help. FAQ. |

I am planning to modify my Magnepan MG12's, but am a novice at modifications. I have several questions before I get started, but 1st the most important question is regarding safety :How do I discharge the stock capacitors before I handle them? I have read numerous comments about this and the best method appears to involve "bleeding" the capacitor using a resistor. My question is what wattage should the resistor be? I have read that 50-500x the capacitor's voltage will tell me the ohms the resistor should be, but I have no idea how many watts the resistor should be.
Also, is this the correct method of discharging the capacitors:
1) Attach one lead of resistor to a ground (any metal object?)
2) Attach the other lead of resistor to positive lead of the capacitor?
I plan to use alligator clips rated at 10 amps, attached to 14 gauge copper wire
