I own a PV10A and it does a wonderful job at warming up even solid state amps. It also has a wonderful phono stage. While a used 10A will be hard to find at your price point, PV10AL's (no phono) should be fairly easy to find. While not the last word in detail, it along with my Conrad Johnson MV50 amp sound wonderful. They have a very deep soundstage. From what I have read, the farther back you go in the PV line (lower numbers) the more romantic or "tubey" the sound gets. Most of the preamps from the 10 on down have depreciated about as much as they will so you can get your money back if the sound is not right for you.
These are all just my opinions, go listen for yourself and have fun!
