Re: Why so many good preamps using hard to find tubes?

Difficulty of design aspects aside, 6922's are not hard to find at all. New Sovteks are cheap and plentiful. What are difficult to find, as you mentioned, are NOS types, mainly because those of us who aren't enamored of Sovtek 6922 sound are willing to pay big bucks for increasingly rare, far better-sounding NOS versions. Right now I am running Siemens-Halske CCa's in my preamp and amp, which typically run over $100 each. But I don't fault the manufacturer for designing his amp using 6922's, as it is my choice to pony up the big green for NOS tubes. My preamp uses 12AX7's and 12AU7's, but it was my choice to use Raytheon 7729's and Amperex 7316PQ's as replacements. My power amp came with Chinese KT88's, but I happen to like the sound of Tesla and GEC versions, as well as expensive brands of tubes in the EL34, 6L6, 6550, and 8417 families.
