IMO, laziness and, perhaps, lack of ability on the part of the designers/engineers is, at least, part of the problem. The 6922 is reasonably linear so circuits without NFB are easy to design. Circuits using NFB that work well and sound good are anything but easy to design, engineer, and execute. Many preamp tubes, other than the 6922, need to be in circuits with some NFB for decent linearity. The development of such circuitry might be problematic from several perspectives, including monetary.Hopefully, those plants currently manufacturing 6DJ8 family tubes will improve their products.
BTW, the 6DJ8 was intended for use as a cascoded TRF gain stage in VHF front ends. That good HIGH frequency preformance makes the type very vulnerable to parasitic oscillation. The hard edge some listeners hear in the 6922 may be due to unsupressed parasitic oscillation.
