Re: More 'opinions'?

>>>When was the last time you heard a Cary 2A3 amp?<<<

Hmmmm...let me think.....hmmmm....Holm Audio is only 12 minutes away from me........hmmmmm......let me jog my memory....Oh about a week and a half ago.

>>>And why don't you spare me all those phone calls to Cary and just tell me what parts they use, as you seem to be a self-proclaimed expert on the subject.<<<

What are you to lazy to do so. If you check the archives you will find more information on this subject. Others have pointed out the same thing. What parts does Cary use.......I know what they don't. For the prices they charge well........No one will tell you as no one wants to come under criticism. I have been with a friend who opened his 300 Sigs. Inside the parts quality was not low but far from high. Especially for the price. Also find out where Cary makes their OPT's. This will take some digging but it's an interesting story how Cary cuts cost so he doesn't have to buy from Magnequest.

>>>And you can spare me the economics lesson until you _yourself_ learn what economies of scale and advertising as a percentage of sales mean.<<<

If we were talking about tens of thousand of units or maybe even thousands I would agree. However the number is much smaller. Thus the curve for advertising vs. price does not pay off. As hi end audio is a small business. Thus the price reflects marketing drastically. Extreme volume rarely exists in hi end audio. When it does it is short lived.

>>>Do the Fi products sound better than the Cary products for less money? They very well may. I haven't ever hear any of the Fi stuff, so I can't possibly have a worthwhile opinion. I tend to voice opinion based on real experience. Try it sometime. Phil says that he thinks the Fi products are much better. THAT is a worthwhile opinion, not because he's 'Phil', but because I know his opinion, unlike yours, is based on actual experience with the product.<<<

It's funny how you ask my opinion however you simply just guess that I have not heard any of the products in question. Before you make an assumption maybe you should ask.

Yes, I have heard both the base model "X"(more recently) and the Fi 300B(about a year ago) monos. The base X gives you about the same performance as the Cary's. Now both do sound different. As the "X" is smooth and has one very sweet midrange with good treble extension and decent bass. However it excels in the crutial midrange. While the Cary seemed somewhat veiled in comparison. However bass was more controlled. The Cary also had more gas. Then again I wonder what the Magnequest upgrade would do to the performance of the "X". It would up the bang for buck factor and boost the performance.

As for build quality. The Cary's have beautiful chasis. The Fi "X" is kinda retro looking and small. As since the layout is in 3 dimensions he was able to save space. The "X" is simplier looking but the build quality is still high. If I remember right Fi even uses silver wire. For some reason I am thinking that.

>>>Bryan, you're certainly entitled to your opinion. I just wish that your opinion had same basis in fact or experience rather than, well, what? To jump up and wave the flag that one company offers better value than another JUST because they advertise and sell through dealers is patently absurd, and that seems to be the whole basis of your 'opinion'. Guess any high-end company that advertises in S'Phile or TAS must be guilty of the same. I'm done here- this is pointless.<<<

Your assumptions are pointless. While my experiances have been limited with 2A3's I have had the chance to hear both. However the Cary 2A3 and Fi 2A3 are all the experiance I have with 2A3's. Oh, wait the UPS man just dropped off a wooden crate. Hmmm....seems like my Moth Audio S2A3 has arrived. I tell you the amplifier weighs 40 lbs but the unit weighs 60 shipped. A nice wooden crate. Now thats cool. Sorry I have to go and have some fun now. I can't wait to look inside her!
