YG,Depends on how you measure the 4 watts. Expensive tube amps tend to be conservatively rated. Cheap solid state amps (most 4 watt SS amp are cheap), are not.
There's more to tube amps than just tubes. Build a unit with hefty transformers, clean power supply, and a clean front end with headroom----and you'll get an amp that may make 4 watts RMS, at 1000 Hz. But has a ton of headroom. And strong bass characteristics.
[my opinion] In tube amps---a good percentage of the tone lies in the transformers and power supply. Lots of iron and clean power mated to a tube with inherent good overdrive (like the 6V6GTA)---and you've got a great 4 watt SET amp.
Use the cheapest transformer, barely adequate filtering, and a so-so IC's---and you have a clock radio.
Two completely different animals. That really shouldn't be compared solely by power output.
