Sean, if you are willing to do some tweaking, such as upgrading caps and DACT attenuator a Nobis Proteus is quite good. Audio Classics had one listed for around $700, new they listed at $1695. The phono card is available for between $200-300. Nobis is now Signature Technology of Milwaukee. I'm extremely happy with mine, but honestly I have never compared it to other tube preamps. It was a real improvement over my Rotel RC-990BX preamp. It's not overly warm or syrupy. Just an idea.
