I have not been overly impressed with the cleartops in the Foreplay preamp circuit. The RCA 5963 sounds as good to me, but they tend to be microphonic. The Amperex Bugle Boy and Telefunken ECC82's sound better to my ear, as did the GE 5814a 5-star. I have about 10 variants of 12AU7/ECC82 and in the Foreplay I think the B-B's are best, and the Tele's right behind, then the list fans out with several that are comparable.I don't have any other preamps using 12AU7s so I can't compare with other gear.
