This configuration seems to be the classic one for people who want tube sound but aren't total tube heads, can't afford the high priced tubed amps, or aren't willing to put up with the heat output of them. There were many good suggestions in this thread. I'll reiterate the one's that I've found true in my experience. A SS amp at the same price point as a tubed amp will probably be somewhat quicker, and more able to drive most speakers, and have a better/tighter bottom end (all generalizations to make it easier YMMV). An amp with a higher input impediance will work best with a tubed (or passive) preamp >=100Kohms is best. I use a Mccormack DNA .5 Deluxe and am very happy.
Tubed preamps range from very tube sounding to very solid state sounding. High quality/new designs above the $2000 mark in both SS and tubes tend to both be neutral sounding. Some manufacturers still lean toward the tube rush more than others though. All are not the same. I have an Audio Prism Mantissa, which is very transparent (like a passive) and neutral with a good amount of that tube magic.
Enjoy the search,
Bob
