Kevin,
The schematic does clarify things. I'm not so good at splain'n things verbally. Sorry for the confusion.
With regards to the Hammond 1605R, if it has 2 4ohm secondaries, connecting in paralell gives a 2 ohm output, in series a 4 & 16ohms, and in series with a grounded center tap 4-g-4ohms. with the end taps out of phase, for a bridged net of 16 ohms. Are you sure one or both of the secondaries doesn't have an additional tap to provide 8ohms?I don't believe using a center tapped seconday requires a true center tap, but simply 2 equal windings that can be connected in series with the juncture of the two serving as the grounded center. Nor would it be necessary to power the speakers with taps that are symmetrical about that tap. One could hook up a speaker from the center tap to one end of the sec and drive 4 ohms, or to the other side and drive a 4 ohm load, or from end to end driving a 16ohm load, or for that matter from center to one side driving a 4ohm load and from center to the other end, another 4ohm load 180 out of phase with the first.
We often do not use a goodly portion of our secondaries.
