Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

Re: but future worries...

There are snobbish people who drink only expensive vintage wines and look down on cheap wines, no matter how good. If one is like that, better no tubes.

And then there are people who drink all kinds, and appreciate cheap but good wines, especially when well-matched to a particular meal. If one is like that, it's not a problem in the near future with tubes.

There are people who insist there's a rigid hierachy, and there's a "best". If one is is like that, better forget it.

And then there are people who think there's a lot of good stuff out there, and appreciate the importance of using and mixing things well. If one is like that, no problem.

There are many ARC and CJ and BAT (etc...) owners who are very happy with their stock tubes, and think there's room for improvment with careful placement and cable matching. And then there are people who put the most expensive tubes in everything and end up with bad sound.

It's important to know one's own personality, otherwise it's hifi hell. Of course there are many who speak about heaven from hell too. To each his own.

My view? Even all-Sovtek modern tube gears can sound wonderful if you take some care, and superior to ss.

Why worry, especially with vintage? Take an example with something like Quad II, Marantz 8B etc, if you have 3 or 4 sets of tubes it will outlast you. Even if you have only a good set it still may see you into the grave. With the info and technik assault we face these days it would be a rare night indeed that we can listen to a few good hours of music.

And of course ss will be with us. I am not switching until I have to, but I won't see that day; maybe my grandson will. And I don't have a child yet.
