This amp was bought built and ready from Capsule Music (edit: music consignment store in Toronto).I think the amp would actually take an EL34 or KT77 without issue. It seems to have the bias supply for it. I just haven't come around to trying those just yet :)
And the amp is actually a bit of an odd ball. It has two switches to change the character the amp. Switch#1 changes the gain character of the preamp (have to do some more poking around inside to see exactly what it's doing, but I think it's an adjustment to the V1 cathode resistor and bypass cap; it boosts the gain to give more of a JCM800 feel over a JTM45 character. Switch#2 acts like a presence boost (especially useful/noticeable when the master is cranked).
I can achieve a Bluesbreaker tone keeping the preamp on the JTM45 setting, and kicking on that Presence. It's pretty freakin' close to authentic.
And I'm running a 4x12 of JBL G125s - it's kind of like a softer/relaxed/less sensitive sounding version of the E120 with lower power handling. I find it breaks up a little nicer, too. I think it's mostly known as a PA speaker, but I recall reading something about country artists and slide guitar players swearing by them for their JBL-character without some of that harshness you can get out of E120s. Not perfect, but REALLY good, versatile, all-around driver.
And I know what you mean about the 6L6GC's. The only ones I found nice-sounding were the Winged C's. And those are long gone :(

May your tubes be lively, warm, and long-lasting. Holy be thy heater.
