I agree with Fender Lover. The Phase Splitter always seemed to influence the sonic of my tube amps- integrated amps in particular seemed quite sensitive. He is spot on about the tone of the Tungsrams IMO they are a slightly warm and sweetly toned tube, the Raytheon by comparison had a sense of control and strength and are notable for clarity.
You are kind of lucky to have EL-84 outputs because you can still find some Mullards and other desirable old stock tubes around. I used a pair of real Mullards in a headphone amp and was delighted by their sound. Of course good tubes will cost a good penny these days but if you are willing they are there.
