Thanks NP...Its people like you and 95% of this forum that make it a pleasure.I have almost every common tube in every vintage and I frequently put up photos of them or caps to show people hey,I didn't just pull this out of a hat, these are the tubes I tested it against or caps.
I had a couple guys email me and say Michael, you have such an elite tube collection, why do you continually promote all this surplus stuff? I would email them back and say, because I have a conscience.I know in my heart just because I own XF1s and Metal base EL34s or Genelex/Gec kt88s doesnt make them the best even if they command high prices..Most people wouldnt dare say a JJ kt77 is better than an XF2 el34 but I sure would and did.I am not going sit here and tell people that the vintage tubes are always the best when I know deep in my heart they are not.
Now the 6N3s I consider vintage because they were made back in the days before they shut down most tube production and started it up again.
You can ask the sellers to find some older ones for you but I dont think its necessary.1981 and earlier are dam good tubes.
BTW,Jim McShane thinks the same way in that he sold his Genelex KT88s when he heard the EI KT90s..He could buy and sell vintage tubes and make lots more money but he has this sickness called a conscience, much the same as myself. He tries to stay out of the magazine hype I imagine as much as I do.
People have to realize when you do a tube or capacitor shootout, much of it is done in a commercial trade magazine and they can't rate the Russian or American surplus caps higher than say a mundorf or auricap. Why? Because those companies advertise with the publication so they would be committing financial suicide if they rated surplus tubes and caps over the current production and advertised stuff.
