Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

Re: Which 519 ?

No problem Aleks, your experience is the opposite of mine !
I too had an 859, and upgraded it to an 869 myself, which led me to improve on certain components ...they are very similar but the 869 does elevate the intrinsic qualities further.
Perhaps due to age some of your caps may be suffering, I actually found two leaking caps on mine in the front end supply stage, so I uprated them with higher voltage versions, Mundorf TubeCaps were a huge improvement over the under rated cheap electrolytics I found in mine, and had a pronounced beneficial effect,(but any healthy cap is going to make a huge difference if you have the same problem).
The input tubes are run with very low stress, they should last a very long time, the output tubes do age much faster so try getting a new pair before going further.having said that Tim runs PCC88's at the input but with 6v heaters, so putting in a 6DJ8 does "beef" things up and they're so common you should try rolling some NOS here..yes i'll say it again also, this amp is a profound machine which can make mockery of many SET or any other design amps such is its transparency and ability to let you hear more of the music and less of the electronics, I think other than topology Tim is a master of output transformers :-))
