I have NOS Siemens and Tele at the moment (do not rememeber which is where), but I am not sure about their age as I have bought the amp used. I had an EAR 859 prior to that for some time and it had more bite and resolution, firmer bass and more extended treble. So I am not sure at the moment what is the reason. Is it just different tubes giving such a dramatic difference or my tubes are getting old. 859 had stock "EAR" tubes. My 869 definitely sounds smoother.
869 and 859 should sound similar, at least that's what I was told by the Man himself.
And you are right - it's a lovely amp, so underrated - it's a crime.
