Hickok 539- tester of the stars?

Ivan303,

It happens I've been looking at Hickok 539Bs lately- a step up from my EICO 666- but the prices for good 539s now are frightening high. My plan is to only buy another tester only if it's a full transmutual conductance tester and it's been fully sorted and calibrated. I find it frustrating to have to constantly fix "tools" and worry they are off-spec.

Unfortunately, the 539 seems to have increased in price faster than my second choice B&K 747 and with the 539B, I saw a silly price of over $1,100 recently. That's an outrage but still, I think a good usuable one will be expensive.

I will live with the EICO 666 a while longer. It's dim in my memory now, but a couple of years ago I saw there were free plans by Steve Bench for a tube tester that cleverly employs a DVM as readout and I think that with patienece could even plot curves. Steve Bench also has free plans for a little noise tester. Someday, when I have the place to do it, I' m attracted to the idea of the tester and noise tester as projects- I calulated the cost of the tester parts at about $120- however I don't know how to do circuit layouts from schematics and I was never able to find anyone with photos of how to set it all up.

Best of luck!

Cheers,

Bambi B
