As is usually the case I can only restate the obvious. Older tubes don't sound better simply because they are old, sorry Jim, but I think its really a very simple principle. The age of an old item only adds to its rarity, it's quality was established when it was made and doesn't change much if left alone with a few examples of contaminants or some unstable structural elements that are not entirely inert.
An old piece of junk is just that, old junk. Perhaps older tubes sound better because they are better tubes to start with, whether it is the metallurgy, the cost of construction, the effort put into all aspects of designing the tube to it's final QC with simply high levels set for standards of acceptability. Remember during the period when many of the older tubes were being used that was the way to amplify a signal, as a result of their widespread use, the tube industry was a much more important business, companies absolutely had to build good products to be competetive in the higher quality end of the spectrum.
As far as Russian anything when they were a product of the state they only had to build good military tubes as far as I can tell-what do I know- until recently entering the world market they sounded pretty bad to me especially the Sovteks from a few years back Just MHO. now they seem to made improvements in line with competition.
