The tubes do make a huge difference in this modified Jadis of mine. I just replaced the 5V4, branded Coronado (sourced from ?), with a 5V4G Marconi Canada, which is built like a 5V4G RCA. The tone is sweeter and 80% of the micro-dynamics I lost is back. Before, it was like the preamp was shouting at me, regardless of volume level. The result is much more musical. The trade off is there is less bass, although it is articulated better, and the gain is a little less. (But, I already couldn't turn the volume past 10:00. Now, it's 11:00.)
I am putting in a 1961 Phillips Miniwatt 12ax7 that I have in place of the EI 12ax7, next. I'll keep you posted. Thanks for the other suggestions. (Sure would like to put in '50s Mullard long plate 12au7s. But, I just saw a pair on Ebay sell for $289!)
