Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

sells 3M copper foil tape in various widths and thicknesses. If you do use the tape solder over the seams as the ehat will cause the adhesive to eventually fail. Useful stuff as it makes for great shields elsewhere in audio and digital gear. I also ground the loops for an even greater effect.
A 6550 has it's shield tied in to the cathode, IIRC, which is why on the later GE's you see that warning printed on the tube that the metal base may carry voltage.
I've tried it on my small signal tubes, 12AX7' and the like and it has an interesting effect. You want to experiment with it there also. I wrap enough copper foil to reach from the base to the lower mica spacer.

have fun,

Stu

PS Funny how only the larger power tubes have the metal bases. Only the very earliest 5AR4's and EL34's also have them, as with the early 6SN7's.
