Tubes Asylum Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ |

Ive been buying a lot of amps lately, not that I need them and Im sure I dont but anyway I bought a very clean dyna st70 on ebay with 4 dynaco mullard el34s for 305.00..It turns out this is a factory wired unit and this baby is clean.Anyway I got another metal based GZ34 out of the Eico hf-50 I just got and I compared it to the dynaco mullard GZ34 in the dyna st70.This is completly stock and I put 6l6gc black plates in and normally I wouldnt do this with the 7199 driver stage but it was able to drive the 6L6gcs to about 3/4 power Id say.Now comparing the metal base GZ34 for the reg mullard GZ34,the metal base tube was a lot cleaner and more accurate and the high end was more pronounced and silkier. This is in a stock dynaco.I then made the comparsion in my modded st70 with the vta driver and there was a still a difference but not nearly as much. The gz34 metal base is actually a phillips miniwatt made in holland where the gz34 is actually a mullard. So there is a difference in the tubes but I dont know if its the metal base or the different manufacturers quality standards or what..I know also that amperex el34s are made in holland and like the mullie el34s they have a hole in the guide pin.
