Too bad it is difficult to change it."There is nothing inherently wrong with a full wave voltage doubler. The Cit II doubler works VERY well. It benefits from some changes in cap values and better diodes are a big help too. But the topology is very sound.
Also, where did the idea come from that a Citation II uses a 1/2 wave voltage doubler? Nope, it's a full wave, it uses two diodes - not just one - and it charges one doubler cap on the positive voltage swing and the other on the negative voltage swing. The ripple in the output of the doubler is 120 Hz, not 60 Hz. That's full wave...
Look at the page I posted the link to, the illustration of the two different types is shown. Compare the full wave doubler circuit shown on that page to a Cit II schematic. They are identical.
