the resistor in question is the cathode load for the 12AU7 stage. The resistor and the unbalanced plate loads are the means of achieving balance with the Schmitt inverter circuit.The 12BH7 stage takes a balanced signal from the plates of the 12AU7. Now you have detailed the improvement that a 6CG7 does when it replaces the 12AU7( and I agree with your analysis and conclusion ). The stage right after the 12AX7 input stage is what I am referring to when I sugest applying a CCS and matching the anode loads.
All the MC series have the same basic layout:SE amplifier stage,, direct coupled to the phase splitter to a PP:PP driver stage and on to the cathode follower and the finals.
