I also have a VAC STandard Preamp and you can get quite different changes as you roll tubes in both the amp and preamp. Right now I'm trying in my PA100.100 at pair of RT12AU7s and a pair of Sylvania GB-5963. The 5963 is an interesting tube to try. I also had a quad of Telefunken 12AU7's that were quite rich and nice. Brimar 12AU7's are also a favorite of mine. I used to use all 4 of the same tubes in the PA100.100 but have just started doing different pairs. Someone mentioned that having a full quad of the same tube might be too much of a particular tube sound. Spicing it up via two pairs of dfferent tubes gives more options. My problem is most everything I've tried in these VAC amps ends up sounding very nice. Some sound different than others, but it's hard to tell sometimes what is best because maybe there is no best, just different degrees of pretty darn tasty!
BTW, I like Rock, Blues and Jazz the most and the 90 Type II do well on that sort of stuff. I'm not much of a classical guy, so can't judge them at all if that's your cup of tea. Nick Drake is sounding pretty good this morning though.
