Hi,I have a stock ST-70 and have investigated a lot of mods to try. The proceedure you describe is the classic triode mod that I have seen (but never tried) for a stock ST-70. I'm not sure what VanAlstine mod you have. VanAlstine described a mod to the ST-70 in the July, 1982 issue of "Audio Basics" which involved a bandpass filter on the input as well as some power supply beefing and larger coupling caps. This modification would not be incompatible with the triode mod and certainly both could be applied together. AVA now offers a "Super 70i Rebuild Kit". I don't know what circuitry changes are involved in this kit, but unless they are changing the wiring/biasing of the EL34's, the triode mod should still be compatible. Maybe he was objecting because he feels they have optimised the sonics for the amp in stock ultralinear mode, and the triode mod will harm the sound. The name of the game is to make it sound the way YOU like it, and I'd certainly give it a try. Just be sure the EL34 circuitry is still wired in the stock configuration before changing it. If you don't have a schematic, you can find one on Ned's site at Triode
