Hello bp,

I think one could build this all on one board, but the iron and tubes and caps take up a lot of real estate. Since they are monoblocks and there will be one on either side of the equipment rack, I opted for the smaller footprint of vertical construction. I guess you saw the picture of the massive 212 amp (by Ed Billeci) that someone put up hear further down? Well, you can imagine what that would look like on one chassis..... There'd be no room to sit in the listening room ;-}

As far as the quietness, I think part of it is the physical separation and part is the use of DC filaments on the 300-B. The ac filament wires are all tightly twisted pairs. Most of the wires are routed to run away from everything else and if it has to cross over another wire, it is elevated and crossed at a 90 degree angle. A lot of planning. I initially made a drawing of the layout on graph paper and just penciled in the wires and erased and re-drew over and over till I had what looked logical. Now that it's assembled, I see new ways to arrange things on the final rendition. The neat thing is that it's wood and terminal blocks can be moved around easily.... just wood screws.

One important trick was to build the power supply first and then, with power applied, move the audio transformers around, with a small battery powered amp and headphones connected to a set of windings on the transformer, you can hear the induced currents from the power supply. The amplitude of the hum tells you where NOT to locate the transformers and also how to orient them.
