Re: Robert H - 6x4 and 6ER5

Geo, I don't know the 6ER5, so sorry, I can't help there.

With the 6X4, you should first go for the D-getter Tungsol, which should be fairly easy to find. It is IMO the best, I've heard and probably still have all the rare & expensive types, the Tungsol is still the best. Early D-getter Mullards are no slouch either, ditto early D-getter Brimars. Be careful with the Euro stuff, the 6X4 was not used much in Europe and sure wasn't getting any development time. Telefunken never made it, and Siemens made it only briefly in the 50's - thankfully, because their 6X4 sounds terrible. I have some D-getter Philips Miniwatt Holland that are quite nice, some Bugle Boys also made in Holland that are the same tube, but I've also seen tons of Valvo, Philips, Amperex stuff that is coming from Philips factories in Brail, Argentina, etc. - the bottom end of Philips production.

The GEC is ok but nothing to write home about, especially for the price. Mazda made some very nice triple mica versons in France that sound really good. Early 50's GE and Sylvania sound nice, particularly GE 6202's. In fact 50's GE production of 6X4 types is really quite good, much better than most others, the Tungsol excepted.

So that's about it, a few more I've forgotten I'm sure, but your first choice in a 6X4 should be the D-getter Tungsol.
